Security Officer of a Federal Building in Oakland was shot while standing watch of the protests responding to George Floyd’s murder
Police have identified the vehicle, but not the license plate, of the white van that pulled up to a federal building in Oakland and opened fire on two officers working for the Department of Homeland Security. David Patrick Underwood, who went by “Pat” and was employed as a security officer at the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Complex, was shot in the femur and died that night, May 29th. The area was erupting into violence as police and protesters clashed, and in this chaos, another African American’s life was tragically stolen. The protests that have popped up all over the country are in response to the murder of George Floyd, who was suffocated to death by a white police officer.
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, labeled the shooter an “assassin” and “cowardly.” People who knew Pat described him as calm, peaceful, and a great athlete who played basketball for his high school in California. The Federal officer was 53 years old. While the racial injustice that infects this country is being justifiably responded to with outcry and disgust, further violence like this is not how the rage should be channeled if solutions are to be found. Pat’s death was a huge loss for our country, and the federal community.
